Despite varying attitudes and opinions towards Singlish, the uniquely Singaporean way of communication is undoubtedly multicultural, hilariously efficient and represents a strong sense of identity for many. This edition of A Lighter Side of History features Singaporean photographer Zinkie Aw and Associate Professor Dr Lai Chee Kien, two individuals from diverse professions, who share their interpretations of Singlish and demonstrate that Singlish is relevant to all Singaporeans, regardless of their profession or background.

About the speakers

Zinkie Aw is an established Singaporean photographer who has published and exhibited her work worldwide. Her photography series on Singlish (Singaporelang – What the Singlish?), which functions like a visual Singlish dictionary, has been a roving exhibition since August 2015. Much like the game of charades, visitors can guess the Singlish term depicted in the photographed scenes. Details of her works can be found here.

Dr Lai Chee Kien is a registered architect in Singapore and researches on histories of art, architecture, settlements, urbanism and landscapes in Southeast Asia.He is also a writer, artist, designer, curator and traveller.
