ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu, Singapore’s most prestigious photography award, makes its debut at the National Museum of Singapore. From 20 August to 5 September, the award’s nominated photographers – Ang Song Nian, Eugene Soh, Jeannie Ho, Ken Cheong, Lavender Chang, Neo Xiaobin and Wilfred Lim – will present their works at the museum’s Stamford Gallery as part of the Singapore Night Festival 2014. Into its fifth edition, ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu is inspired by the founding principles of the house of Martell – creativity, independence and the pursuit of excellence, and is a celebration of individuals who share these same values.

Like the art of photography, the art of cognac making at the house of Martell places great emphasis on the intricate details that contribute to the creation of Martell cognacs. It is this close attention to detail that cognac making shares with photography, which will also be the focus of an exhibition featuring past ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu winners. Showing photographs taken by Sherman Ong, Sean Lee and Edwin Koo on each of their trips to Cognac, the exhibition will showcase the important details that go into making an exceptional photograph and an outstanding cognac.

Martell continues to bring the idea of discernment in the details to life with an interactive work by ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu 2013 winner, Choo Jing Sarah. Drawing on the principle of discernment shown through the work of local artisans, Choo photographed them at work to create a series of individual images that will be used to compose a digital photographic composite. The audience will be invited to take on the role of both voyeur and artist, changing the narrative each time through controlling the placement of figures within the scene.
