Samsui Women: Laying the Bricks
Suitable for students aged 5 to 8 years (Kindergarten & Primary)
Venue   The Lab
Date      THU 1 JAN 2009 - THU 31 DEC 2009

This programme is endorsed by National Arts Council Arts Education Programme and is eligible for the 60% Tote Board Arts Grant subsidy.

Using an innovative approach to national education, students trace the life of a samsui woman through her work and living environment, and learn the significance of the red headgear. The artful combination of role-play and historical slideshow aims to educate students about migrant workers in Singapore. Students will each be given a samsui woman postcard printed from our exclusive  museum collection where they can write and pay tribute to these early migrant workers. They will also experience the load which samsui women used to carry at construction sites and learn to fold their very own red headgear to store their coins in. Students will be guided to think about the samsui women's experience in the context of the construction workers we see today.
