Learn about Singapore's vibrant past through fashion, accessories, music and dance! In this series of workshops, students will get to know more about Singapore in the 1950s - 1970s through the Museum's popular Fashion gallery and our colourful handling collection. They will get to take part in hands-on activities, touch different fabrics and try on vintage fashion accessories. This unique learning experience will allow students to take a peek into Singapore's history, understand vintage fashion and at the same time, have fun while exploring their creativity.
Be A Designer: For 5 to 6 years (K1 to K2)
The workshop takes a light-hearted approach in introducing young and inquisitive minds on fashion, colours and patterns. Students will get to touch and feel the textures of different fabrics used for making clothes and try on a variety of fashion accessories like wigs, curlers, clogs, cat sunglasses and many more. Students will also have the opportunity to an iconic fashion accessory of the 1960s and take it home after the session. This workshop will conclude with a tour of the Fashion gallery.
My Grandparents' World: For 7 to 9 years (Primary 1 to 3)
The workshop uses an inquiry-based approach to stimulate the student's thought process as they draw comparisons from fashion in different periods. With focus on the students' grandparents' generation, students gets to discuss topics such as what their grandparents wore and how their clothes were made. They also get to view videos and pictures of Singapore in the past, as well as fashion artefacts in the Fashion gallery. A highlight of this workshop will have the students role-playing as their 'young' grandparents attending a tea-party. They will also have fun as they take part in fashion-related hands-on activities.
Dress Me Up: For 10 to 12 years (Primary 4 to 6)
In this group-based workshop, students will assume the role of a researcher with a local broadcast TV station where they get to plan the wardrobe for various characters in a drama series set in the 1960s. To ease the students into their role, they will get to view videos and pictures depicting iconic fashion of the era such as mini skirts, bell bottom pants, beehive hairstyles, and more. They will also conduct a mini research in the Fashion gallery. The workshop will conclude with a fashion show where the students will introduce the 'characters' they have dressed and explain the rationale in selecting the characters' attire.
