National Museum's Gallery Companion Goes Japanese
Singapore, 21 February 2008 – After the English, Mandarin and Malay versions, the National Museum has now launched its multimedia Japanese Companion. The Companion is a handheld device designed specially to guide visitors around the National Museum’s Singapore History Gallery.

Japanese visitors and speakers of the language can look forward to the history of Singapore narrated, explained and dramatised by voice actors in Japanese. Involving a meticulous production, from translating the entire script to sourcing for suitable voice talents, the Japanese Companion was recorded in Singapore and Tokyo.

Descriptions of each and every artefact in the History Gallery can now be displayed in Japanese, while audio interviews, video clips are subtitled in the Companion. Dramatised scenarios acted out by voice actors are also done in Japanese.

“There are about 60 Japanese docents volunteering at the National Museum now. With the introduction of the Japanese Companion, it can complement and reinforce their guided tours. The Japanese have a very strong museum-going culture. With the Companion, they can experience the Museum as it was meant to be experienced,” says Mr Iskander Mydin, Deputy Director of Curation & Collections, National Museum of Singapore.

The key talents employed in the Japanese Companion, such as the director (Kazuo Sato), the narrator (Nahoko Kodama) and the voice of the companion (Reona Mori), are Japanese who are residing in Singapore. Voice talents for the dramatised scenarios were recruited in Tokyo. The National Museum of Singapore is the first and only museum in Southeast Asia to have a multimedia companion that was designed to fully complement its physical collection.

“After the production of the English, Mandarin and Malay Companion, we are confident of handling the technical aspects involved in producing the Japanese Companion, so this time round, the main challenge was in fact looking for suitable voice talents, which was not something we had encountered with any of the previous Companions,” shares Panuksmi Hardjowirogo, Executive Producer of GSM Media, the company responsible for both the creative and technical production of the Companion. “There are many Japanese residing in Singapore but very few are experienced voice talents. We made our way to Tokyo to select from their huge pool of talents,” she continues.

The National Museum of Singapore is the first and only museum in Southeast Asia to have a multimedia companion that was designed to fully complement its physical collection.

About the National Museum of Singapore

With a rich history dating back to its inception in 1887, the National Museum of Singapore is Singapore’s oldest museum with the youngest and most innovative soul. The programming is supported by a wide range of facilities and services including F&B, retail, Resource Centre, Gallery Theatre and the Public Sculpture Garden among others. With a rich history dating back to 1887, the National Museum of Singapore re-opened in December 2006.
