Ziya Azazi - Choreographer / Dancer
A self-taught practitioner, Ziya Azazi did his first steps in gymnastics and dance in the years of 1989 to 1992 and created his first choreographic works in the State Theatre of Istanbul in 1990 to 1994.
Azazi moved to Vienna in 1994, where he continued his work in contemporary dance and gymnastics. He participated in many different festivals and Viennese dance groups and won the dance scholarship of the Summer Dance week Vienna (Danceweb) in 1999.His first confrontation with whirling came in Vienna in 1999. The idea to reduce and crystallize his dance vocabulary was his starting point. The whirling started by accident and the untitled short solo he created inspired him to develop this theme for himself. This led to his full evening solo of Unterwegs tabula rasa, which won him an honourable mention from the European jury as the most outstanding dancer of the year from Austria in 1999.
Azazi became more and more interested in traditional Sufi whirling dance and created numerous contemporary interpretations and choreographic variations of this theme like his solos Work in progress I & II, where he performed in Vienna, other Austrian cities, Ankara and Hamburg as well.
As a traditional dervish whirler, Azazi has performed with Mercan Dede, Sertap Erener and Sabri Tulu Trpan. He has also performed his two solos, Dervish in Progress and Ázab (which premiered in 2005 in Brazil), in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, The Netherlands, The Czech Republic, Turkey, Italy, Spain, France, The United Kingdom, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and Iran. He has integrated these solos into the full-length performance called Dervish and is still touring world wide.
