The Prince of Gowns
A selection of Benny Ong’s works from 1988 – 1989
Organised by the National Museum of Singapore
This exhibition unveils for the first time in Singapore, ten evening dresses by Benny Ong, a well-known local fashion designer who established himself in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States from 1970s to 1990s.
The career of the talented and enterprising Benny Ong took off soon after his graduation from St. Martin’s School of Art and Design, London in 1974. His collections were sold all over the world and can be found in Harrods, Selfridges and Liberty in London, and Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman in New York. His private clients include the late Princess Diana, the Duchess of Kent, the Queen of Jordan and Shakira Caine.
His clothes are valued not only for their beauty but also workmanship and this display is but a small selection of the beautiful clothes he donated to the museum in 2006. The silk taffeta evening dresses were inspired by various art movements like neo-classicism and romanticism, and serve to explain why his evening wear continues to be viewed as valuable classical ‘art’ pieces even now.
Get re-acquainted with Benny Ong, one of Singapore’s pioneer and most prestigious fashion exports.
