Ibrahim Quraishi’s 5 Streams

A synthetic forest of sonic mixes promises to set your body a-tremble with sound as you wander and meditate in this interactive installation.

Acclaimed director and choreographer Ibrahim Quraishi presents his personal thoughts on a world torn apart by conflict but unified through shared identities and experiences. Together with an extraordinary international team of artists, Ibrahim uses explosive sounds, vocal techniques, intense khatak-inspired sequences, video streaming and live percussion to create a hypnotic background in which dancers appear as installation pieces.

This cross-media performance and installation draws from three significant works from Hindu and Indo-Muslim/Persian/Arbo-Andolusian traditions:

  • Anarkali, a tragic court romance of Mughal India
  • Bhagavad-Gita, the deeply philosophical climax of the Indian epic work, the Mahabhrata
  • Risale-t-ul-wujudiyyah, a mystical work by the 12th century Sufi philosopher Ibn a-Arabi.

5 Streams was commissioned by Asia Society, New York in association with MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art).
