New Dance in Indonesia

The many facets of culture infuse this dance showcase with a deep complexity that only adds to the depth of the performances. Five of Indonesia’s most exciting choreographers, all hailing from their own distinct traditions and cultures, show us that culture is never a single, universal concept. Instead, they present culture as a hybrid of many aspects, made and remade through changes and differences.

5 Pieces looks at how Indonesian dance and music have been changing, and how they are represented in contemporary times. Especially interesting is the how these dance performances explore the ways in which Indonesian dance and music move with the times by stretching outside of traditional boundaries. Featuring works by Jecko Siompo and Eko Supriyanto (of Opera Jawa fame), Hartati, Hanny Herlina and Indra Zubir,
